Nestled at the foot of the Himalayas, Bhutan seems untouched by the passage of time. After centuries of voluntary isolation, it opened its doors in 1974. Astounded, the first travelers discovered landscapes of extraordinary beauty, architectural marvels, an exceptionally hospitable population and a perfectly intact traditional culture.

In spite of its abundant natural resources, Bhutan emerged as one of Asia’s poorest countries, refusing to enter the race for profit at any price. Deeply rooted in the past, Bhutan is now modernizing in its own way. It is determined to preserve its culture and natural heritage, and fiercely defends its Buddhist values.
