Langtang Valley Trek – 10 days

10 Days

The Langtang Valley trek commences in Kathmandu, where you will board a bus to Syabrubesi, the gateway to your adventure. This picturesque village is located alongside the Bhotekosi River. As you make your way along the trail, you will ascend in elevation, initially passing through oak and rhododendron forests, followed by bamboo groves in the higher altitudes.

Your journey through Langtang will take you to the Langtang Valley and the nearby Sherpa village of Kyanjing Gompa. In Kyanjing Gompa, you will experience the vibrant lifestyle of devoted Buddhist monks who perform their rituals in a historic monastery that dates back to around 1300 A.D. Early in the morning, you will hike up Tserko Ri to take in the stunning views of the Langtang Lirung range.

After enjoying breakfast, you will retrace your steps back to Syabrubesi, where you will spend the night. The trek concludes with a return to Kathmandu via private vehicle.

It is a long bus ride, but a great diversity in the landscapes. From Kakani (2145m), you can admire Annapurna II, Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung. The road heads towards the plain where Trisuli Bazar (548m) is located, 72 km from Kathmandu. The last part seems the longest, the road being a track that goes up the Trisuli River. After reaching Dhunche (1950m), the road continues along the hillside before reaching Syabru Besi after a series of impressive bends.

We will enter the Langtang Valley, where we will travel up the river of the same name. The path passes by Bamboo Lodge (1970m), then climbs through an oak forest to Rimche (2455m), and finally we arrive at Changtang, better known as Lama Hotel.

We ascend further, entering a coniferous forest. It is a steep climb to Ghoratabela (2992m). The first yaks appear as the valley gets wider and we pass over the forest area. The village of Langtang, the final settlement in the valley where cereals are primarily grown, is protected by the edge of the enormous basin. We see a lot of prayer wheels and water mills. A stunning view of Ganchenpo (6387m) can be seen from Langtang.

This morning, we ascend the moraine cord that confines the valley. Prior to reaching the summit, we traverse a lengthy sequence of mani walls. The valley is now wide and has a typical glacial profile, with granite walls and waterfalls. Kyanjin, formerly a summer village, now boasts numerous lodges to accommodate visitors.

We take advantage of this day to explore the surroundings. There are enough goals to satisfy everyone: visit the first cheese factory in Nepal, created in 1956 by the Swiss – walk to the Lirung glacier – climb to Kyanjin Ri, 4773m above the village from where the view of the Langtang Lirung (7225m) and the Lirung glacier is spectacular – or, more peacefully, climb up the Langtang Khola by the left bank in forests of rhododendrons and birches; cross the hamlets of Jatang and Numthang and arrive at Langshisa Kharka (4160m) at the bottom of the valley.

The route is the same on the way back. We take the time to appreciate the surrounding peaks and the diverse vegetation; in addition to the birds, we also see monkeys frolicking in the sun or jumping from branch to branch.
