The Jokhang Temple, or “place of devotion,” features significant statues of Guru Rinpoche and Maitreya around the eleven-headed Chenrezi. Its most revered area, the Holy of Holies, houses the Jowo statue of the historical Buddha, believed to have been brought by Songtsen Gampo’s Chinese wife, symbolizing Tibetan faith and attracting numerous pilgrims.
Historically, three concentric circles surrounded the Jokhang, where pilgrims would walk while reciting mantras or prostrating. The Barkhor, the middle circle, is Lhasa’s vibrant religious and commercial center, where pilgrims walk clockwise, stopping to shop and negotiate.
Sera Monastery, meaning “enclosure of wild roses,” is situated north of Lhasa on a hillside. Founded around 1420, it was a historical rival to Drepung, once housing over 5,000 monks. Sera is one of Tibet’s best-preserved monasteries, with its main structures surviving the Cultural Revolution, and nearby is the site for “sky burials.”

The Potala Palace, a stunning 17th-century structure built by the “Great Fifth” Dalai Lama, stands prominently in Lhasa, measuring 375 meters in length and 130 meters in height. It has served as the Tibetan government’s seat and the residence and burial site for Dalai Lamas, all while maintaining a harmonious presence against the mountainous backdrop.
Drepung Monastery, or “heap of rice,” is situated west of Lhasa, surrounded by hills. Once the largest monastic institution globally, it was home to up to 10,000 monks and esteemed scholars. The second, third, and fourth Dalai Lamas lived and were interred here, and it served as the governance center for the fifth Dalai Lama until the Potala Palace was finished. Drepung experienced relatively less impact during the Cultural Revolution compared to other Gelugpa monasteries.
