Attractions: Drepung and Sera Monasteries

Drepung Monastery, or “heap of rice,” is located west of Lhasa in a serene valley. Once the world’s largest monastic complex, it accommodated up to 10,000 monks and was a significant religious center, housing the second, third, and fourth Dalai Lamas. The fifth Dalai Lama governed from here until the Potala Palace was finished, and it sustained minimal damage during the Cultural Revolution.

Sera Monastery, meaning “the garden of roses,” lies north of Lhasa on terraced land. Established around 1420, it rivaled Drepung and once had over 5,000 monks. Sera is one of Tibet’s best-preserved monasteries, with its main structures largely intact from the Cultural Revolution.

East of Sera Monastery is the site of “sky burials,” a traditional practice where the deceased are dismembered and offered to vultures. Stay overnight in Lhasa.

Attractions: Potala Place, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street.

The Potala Palace, a key symbol of Lhasa, stands impressively at 375 meters long and 130 meters high. Constructed in the 17th century under the “Great Fifth” Dalai Lama, it has served as the center of Tibetan governance and the residence for Dalai Lamas.

The Jokhang Temple, or “place of devotion,” houses important statues, including those of Guru Rinpoche and the eleven-headed Chenrezi. Its innermost sanctum contains the revered Jowo statue of the historical Buddha, a significant symbol of Tibetan faith brought by Songtsen Gampo’s consort, attracting numerous pilgrims.

Historically, the Jokhang was encircled by three paths for pilgrims to chant and prostrate. The Barkhor, the lively middle circle, acts as the spiritual and commercial core of old Lhasa, where pilgrims walk clockwise, often pausing to shop and negotiate prices. Stay overnight in Lhasa.
