Upper Mustang via Ghar Gompa Trek – 17 days

17 Days

The Mustang Valley trek takes adventurers to the ancient kingdom of Tibet in Mustang, northwest Nepal. This route is famous for its connection to the Muktinath pilgrimage site and Sherpa traditions, showcasing Tibetan culture. Jomsom, the valley’s administrative center, is one of Nepal’s windiest locations.

Historically restricted, Mustang lies north of the Annapurna Mountains at the Kali Gandaki River’s source, featuring rugged mountains, grazing yaks and goats, and deep gorges. The traditional paths remain largely untouched, allowing visitors to experience the beauty and rich traditions of ancient Tibet, with highlights including the Tsarang monastery and the historic walled city of Lo-Manthang.

The trek begins at Jomsom airport, passing through Kagbeni’s mud houses and narrow streets. Trekkers navigate the fertile Lo-Manthang valley, where local architecture features firewood stacks and sheep and yak horns, symbolizing social status. Monasteries from the 1420s, adorned with intricate mandalas, provide cultural insights, while Thungchengompa’s grand assembly halls enhance the experience.

A highlight of this trek is visiting King’s palace of Mustang and his royal family, learning about their history in this ancient region. You’ll explore upper Mustang and its two mysterious valleys, visiting key sites like the Mustang Late King’s summer palace and Namgyalgompa. This valley has long served as a vital trade route to Tibet. The Mustang Valley trek promises to be an unforgettable experience.
